West Side Story is a crime drama musical film about two young people from rival gangs in New York who meet and fall in love. The movie opens showing a white gang, the Jets, and a rival gang of Puerto Rican immigrants, the Sharks. One of the Jets are captured by the Sharks which results in a fight between the two gangs. They decide that they will have an all out rumble. Meanwhile, Maria, the sister of a member of the Sharks, falls in love with Tony, co-founder of the Jets. The two try to work together to hide their love while at the same time convincing their gangs to hold back. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymor, Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn, and George Chakiris. Based on the play (and book) of the same name by Arthur Laurents.
West Side Story saw great success in theaters after its release. Today, the film is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time.
