1950s Academy Award Winners

The 1950s saw a decline in box office numbers due to the growing popularity of the television. However, Americans felt a social boom at home economically. The Korean War took place during much of the decade and the cold war was just getting started.

Although film was seeing a decline at the box office, the decade saw new techniques developed and new era of big budget films. Sword and sandal epics became increasingly popular with The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, and Hercules, and Sci-fi saw a growing interest with films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Invaders from Mars, Them!, The Time Machine, and The War of the Worlds. Also starting to hit during this decade were The Walt Disney Studios productions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and The Shaggy Dogg.

From 1944 to 1961 the "Best Picture" Oscar was named "Best Motion Picture."
