The Exorcist (film) Quotes

Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil

  • (Ellen Burstyn) "How do you go about getting an exorcism?"
  • (Jason Miller) "I beg your pardon?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Operator, you've given me the number four times. What did you do, take an illiteracy test to get that job for Christ sake?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Would you like some bourbon in that, father?"
  • (Max von Sydow) "Well, my doctor says I shouldn't but thank God my will is weak."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Father Dyer? I thought you'd like to keep this."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Is it over?"
  • (Jason Miller) "No"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Is she going to die?"
  • (Jason Miller) "No."
  • (Dr. Klein) "Do you keep any drugs in your house?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "No, of course not, nothing like that."
  • (Dr. Klein) "Are you sure?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Well, of course I'm sure. I'd tell you. Christ, I don't even smoke grass."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Well, give me an example. Like what specifically did she say?"
  • (Dr. Klein) "Specifically, Mrs. MacNeil, she advised me to "keep my fingers away from her god****ed c***.""
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "You show me Regan's double, same face, same voice, everything. And I'd know it wasn't Regan. I'd know in my gut. And I'm telling you that 'thing' upstairs isn't my daughter. Now, I want you to tell me that you know for a fact that there's nothing wrong with my daughter, except in her mind. You tell me for a fact that an exorcism wouldn't do any good. You tell me that."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Jesus Christ, Karl. Don't do that."
  • (Rudolf Schündler) "Yeah, but you see, no rats."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "No rats. Terrific."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "You really don't want me to play, huh?"
  • (Linda Blair) "No, I do. Captain Howdy said no."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Captain who?"
  • (Linda Blair) "Captain Howdy."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Who's Captain Howdy?"
  • (Linda Blair) "You know, I make the questions and he does the answers."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Oh, Captain Howdy --"
  • (Dr. Barringer, Clinic Director) "It looks like a type of disorder that you rarely ever see any more, except in primitive cultures. We call it a somnambuliform possession. Quite frankly, we don't know much about it except that it starts with some conflict or guilt that eventually leads to the patient's delusion that his body's been invaded by an alien intelligence, a spirit if you will."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Look, I'm telling you again and you'd better believe it: I'm not about to put her in a god**** asylum. And I don't care what you call it. I'm not putting her away."
  • (Dr. Barringer, Clinic Director) "I'm sorry."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "You're sorry. Jesus Christ, 88 doctors and all you can tell me with all of your bulls*** is --"
  • (Dr. Barringer, Clinic Director) "There is one outside chance of a cure. I think of it as shock treatment. As I say, there is an outside chance --"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Will you just name it, for God's sake? What is it?"
  • (Unnamed) "Do you have any religious beliefs?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "No."
  • (Unnamed) "What about your daughter?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "No, why?"
  • (Dr. Barringer, Clinic Director) "Have you ever heard of exorcism? It's a stylized ritual in which rabbis or priests try to drive out the so-called invading spirit. It's pretty much discarded these days, except by the Catholics who keep it in the closet as a sort of embarrassment. It has worked, in fact, although not for the reason they think, of course. It was purely the force of suggestion. The victim's belief in possession helped cause it. And just in the same way, this belief in the power of exorcism can make it disappear."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "We've got rats in the attic. You better get some traps."
  • (Rudolf Schündler) "Rats?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Mm-hmm. 'Fraid so."
  • (Rudolf Schündler) "But the attic is clean."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "All right, then we've got clean rats."

Max von Sydow as Father Merrin

  • (Max von Sydow) "Especially important is the warning to avoid conversations with the demon. We may ask what is relevant but anything beyond that is dangerous. He is a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that; do not listen."
  • (Max von Sydow) "Evil against evil."
  • (Max von Sydow) "What is your daughter's middle name, Mrs. MacNeil?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Teresa."
  • (Max von Sydow) "What a lovely name."

Jason Miller as Father Karras

  • (Jason Miller) "My idea of Heaven is a solid white nightclub with me as a headliner for all eternity, and they love me."
  • (Jason Miller) "Ego te absolvo in nomine Patris, et Filiii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen."
  • (Demon) "I'm not Regan."
  • (Jason Miller) "Well, then let's introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras."
  • (Demon) "And I'm the Devil. Now kindly undo these straps."
  • (Jason Miller) "If you're the Devil, why not make the straps disappear?"
  • (Demon) "That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras."
  • (Demon) "You killed your mother. You left her alone to die. Bastard."
  • (Jason Miller) "Shut up."
  • (Jason Miller) "There are no experts. You probably know as much about possession than most priests. Look, your daughter doesn't say she's a demon. She says she's the devil himself. And if you've seen as many psychotics as I have, you'd know it's like saying you're Napoleon Bonaparte."
  • (Jason Miller) "I reckon I saved him from a great temptation."
  • (Jason Miller) "Stealing's a sin."
  • (Jason Miller) "You know, you look a bit like Bogart."
  • (Lee J. Cobb) "You noticed."
  • (Jason Miller) "The Power of Christ compels you."
  • (Jason Miller) "You son of a bitch."
  • (Jason Miller) "Take me. Come into me. God damn you. Take me. Take me."
  • (Jason Miller) "NOOOO."
  • (Demon) "Mirabile dictu, don't you agree?"
  • (Jason Miller) "You speak Latin?"
  • (Demon) "Ego te absolvo."
  • (Jason Miller) "Quod nomen mihi est?"
  • (Demon) "Bon Jour."
  • (Jason Miller) "Quod nomen mihi est?"
  • (Demon) "La plume de ma tante."
  • (Jason Miller) "Would you like to hear about the case, first?"
  • (Max von Sydow) "Why?"
  • (Jason Miller) "Where is Regan?"
  • (Demon) "In here. With us."
  • (Jason Miller) "It's my mother, Tom. She's alone. I never should have left her. At least in New York, I'd be near, I'd be closer."
  • (Tom, President of University) "Could see about a transfer, Damien."
  • (Jason Miller) "I need re-assignment, Tom. I want out of this job. It's wrong. It's no good."
  • (Tom, President of University) "You're the best we've got."
  • (Jason Miller) "Am I really? It's more than psychiatry, and you know that Tom. Some of their problems come down to faith, their vocation and meaning of their lives, and I can't cut it anymore. I need out. I'm unfit. I think I've lost my faith, Tom."
  • (Jason Miller) "Listen, if you ever go up there again will you take me along?"
  • (Astronaut) "What for?"
  • (Jason Miller) "First missionary on Mars."
  • (Demon) "What an excellent day for an exorcism."
  • (Jason Miller) "You would like that?"
  • (Demon) "Intensely."
  • (Jason Miller) "But wouldn't that drive you out of Regan?"
  • (Demon) "It would bring us together."
  • (Jason Miller) "You and Regan?"
  • (Demon) "You and us."
  • (Jason Miller) "There isn't a day in my life when I haven't felt like a fraud. I mean priests, doctors, I've talked to them all. I don't know anyone who hasn't felt that."
  • (Jason Miller) "I should have told you I wouldn't be in uniform."

Lee J. Cobb as Lt. Kinderman

  • (Lee J. Cobb) "You know who you look like? John Garfield. Exactly, John Garfield, "Body and Soul." Do people ever tell you that, Father?"
  • (Jason Miller) "Do people tell you that you look like Paul Newman?"
  • (Lee J. Cobb) "Always."
  • (Lee J. Cobb) "A draft in the fall when the house is hot is a magic carpet for germs."
  • (Lee J. Cobb) "If certain British doctors never asked "What is this fungus?" we wouldn't today have penicillin, correct?"

Linda Blair as Regan

  • (Linda Blair) "Captain Howdy, do you think my mom's pretty? -- Captain Howdy? -- Captain Howdy, that isn't very nice."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Well, maybe he's sleeping."
  • (Linda Blair) "I heard -- differently."
  • (Psychiatrist) "Is there someone inside you?"
  • (Linda Blair) "Sometimes."
  • (Psychiatrist) "Who is it?"
  • (Linda Blair) "I don't know."
  • (Psychiatrist) "Is it Captain Howdy?"
  • (Linda Blair) "I don't know."
  • (Psychiatrist) "If I ask him to tell me, will you let him answer?"
  • (Linda Blair) "No."
  • (Psychiatrist) "Why not?"
  • (Linda Blair) "I'm afraid."
  • (Linda Blair) "Mother? What's wrong with me?"
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "It's just like the doctor said. It's nerves, and that's all. You just take your pills and you'll be fine, really. Okay?"
  • (Linda Blair) "But ya like him."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Of course I like him. I like pizzas, too, but I'm not gonna marry one."
  • (Linda Blair) "You're going to die up there."

Jack MacGowran as Burke Dennings

  • (Jack MacGowran) "c***ing Hun. Bloody damn butchering Nazi pig."
  • (Jack MacGowran) "So, what's for dessert?"
  • (Jack MacGowran) "Tell me, was it public relations you did for the Gestapo or community relations?"
  • (Rudolf Schündler) "I'm Swiss."
  • (Jack MacGowran) "Oh, of course. And you never went bowling with Goebbels before either, I suppose? Nazi bastard."
  • (Jack MacGowran) "There seems to be an alien pubic hair in my gin. Never seen it before in my life. Have you?"

Robert Symonds as Dr. Taney

  • (Robert Symonds) "Pathological states can induce abnormal strength. Accelerated motor performance. Now, for example, say a 90 pound woman sees her child pinned under the wheel of a truck. Runs out and lifts the wheels a half a foot up off the ground; you've heard the story; same thing here. Same principle, I mean."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "So what's wrong with her?"
  • (Dr. Klein) "We still think the temporal lobe."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Oh what are you talking about, for Chrissakes? Did you see her or not? She's acting like she's f***ing out of her mind, psychotic, like a -- split personality or --"
  • (Robert Symonds) "There haven't been more than a hundred authentic cases of so-called split personality, Mrs. MacNeil. Now I know the temptation is to leap to psychiatry. But any reasonable psychiatrist would exhaust the somatic possibilities first."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "So, what's next?"
  • (Robert Symonds) "A pneumoencephalogram, I would think. Pin down that lesion. It will involve another spinal."
  • (Ellen Burstyn) "Oh, Christ."
  • (Robert Symonds) "What we missed in the EEG and the arteriograms could conceivably turn up there. At least, it would eliminate certain other possibilities."

Kitty Winn as Sharon

(We don't have any quotes for this character)

Rudolf Schündler as Karl

  • (Rudolf Schündler) "It wants no straps."
