Quotations from The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter is a drama war film that follows three Russian American steel workers and their infantry service in the Vietnam War. The movie is divided into three parts. The first part is in a small working class town in Pennsylvania, where the men talk about their eventual military service. The second part takes place in Vietnam, where three of the friends are all forced to go and end up serving time in a prison camp together. And the third part takes place after the war, back in the United States. The title of the film comes from one of the friends enjoying hunting deer. Directed by Michael Cimino. Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Savage, and Meryl Streep.

The Deer Hunter was a well received film, despite there being some controversy about the Russian Roulette scene where, while prisoners, the friends are forced to play the game. The movie won five Oscar awards, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Walken, his first award). Continue reading for quotes from The Deer Hunter.

Axel: Lemme ask you a question: how come I never see you eat?
Nick: I like to starve myself: it keeps the fear up.
Michael: I'll tell ya one thing, if I find out my life had to end up being in the mountains, it'd be all right, but it has to be in your mind.
Nick: What? One shot?
Michael: Two is pussy.
Michael: Stanley, see this? This is this. This ain't something else. This is this. From now on, you're on your own.
Michael: A deer has to be taken with one shot. I try to tell people that but they don't listen.
Julien: When a man says no to champagne, he says no to life.
Angela: It's such a grey day.
Stan: How does it feel to be shot?
Michael: Don't hurt. That's what you wanna know. And how it's been, doing OK.
Stan: Yeah, same thing. Nothing's changed. I'm getting more ass than a toilet seat and Axel here, he's getting fatter than ever.
Nick: You trying to look like a prince?
Michael: What do you mean, 'trying'?
Nick: You got the wrong guy, ace!
