about emos and stuff like that, labels and whatever

Category: Personal diary

ok so I was reading this kinda diary ting and someone was saying how it pisses them off that people just think all emos cut and whatever. Honestly I have no idea what being emo means...except that from pictures online they dress cool..lol...anyway so then the girl went on to say that emos are just emotionally sensitive people..por something like that.
So point is I wanna know exactly what being emo means. Because well I'm pretty emotional...it sucks, kinda hard to hold back tears and such and i hate that. Oh and ok another thing, I don't see it as cutting even though it actually is but well ok sometimes I cut under my feet and the palm of my hands just because I think it's like time or whatever and at that point in time I just don't like how my skin feels...now I never bleed or anything but it's pretty stupid cuz after it hurts like hell to walk..but well so um I dunno if that thing is like some kind of deep physiological issue or what but I just want to know what you think about this...
Oh and the reason I don't know what emo is and goth and prep and such is because we don't have labels here except like loser lol but that's it.
oh and one more thing, is being emo bad or something? like in chats and such when ppl say they're emo the way others react you'd swear they had a plague or something...that you could catch via internet!!

some might say emo is the way u act and some might say its a fashion scence, persanaly i think emo is a state of mind, and also just because u were black dosnt make u "emo" its kinda like wings dont make the angle, i have a good aquantence that came to me for help, she is labled as "prep" but she is very depressed she wears alot of bright colors and fakes a smile because she dosnt want anyone else to no what she truly is. so if i had a lable for her it would be "emo". not all emo's cut eather and there are some people who cut that are not emo. cutting is a way to vent for some people, they do it because they eather one, want attention and cant get it, or two, they have so much mental pain they cut so they can focus on physuical pain. and for all you people who say you dont like lables well i hate to break it to u but there everywere, i mean lables are as complex as emo, or prep, to as simple as mom and dad. there are even lables in the work life like boss or co worker. so its not that u dont like lables its that you dont like steriotypes.

wow here i was thinking this topic was dead. guess it isn't.
i'm glad everyone is still sharing their views. i'm learning quite a lot
Comment by ThaGhost: 2009-07-22
Honestly I never heard of emo till I got to myspace layouts... seriously, but you are who you create youself to be. If you see yourself emo-tional or a poet than thats who you are. We tend ( as people ) to label any an everything we dont understand. Now that I know what emo really is all I can say is they are who they are, just like us all, and as I sit and absorb all these POems I still cant know the individual. but clearly were all emo-tional. so how can there be a specific type of people called that? Hell I'm emo-tional!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by friendZdogZ: 2009-07-19
well wow I can't believe people are still talking about this. but please do continuie, I am a fan of learning and hearing everyone's views. you kniow broarden my mind and stuff.

I think labeling is so silly, and people do this so that they have a name for anything they fear and have no idea what it is. Emo is differnt for everyone. Edgar Allen poe was Emo, and his writings made him famous. Just because someone is a deep thinker, or may view situations from every point of view and can emotionaly rationalize with it makes them emo.... then i feel sorry for all those who are not in touch with any feelings towards any situation. emo is expression, it's what makes for good stories, peoms, it's walking art by clothing options. In choice of expression through t shirts, etc. it's discovering who your are while sometimes making a bigger fuss out of things...more than others do.... like a Diva, only not LOL No labels it silly and well useless. Emo is not a bad thing look at Andy warhol.... Very emo but so expressive and awesome. Smiley

To me "emo" is just a label.
Just lie with nerd and crap like that.
But I do think some people use it as a term for those who are just filling a little low or depressed.
Mostly where I come from people use it for people who cut themselves.
Although there are some who call themselves emo because its a type of style. The dont cut themselves but have hairstyles, clothing, etc of what might be called emo.

I agree with the people who say that it isn;t true that all emo's cut themselves for attention.
I mean I don't cut myself. But in my mind those who dont cut themselves for attention find it as a sense of release or a distraction form emotional pain or other pain.. but i could be wrong about that.
I do know of people who do cut for attention.

but to me its mostly a label... stereotyping
Comment by ForeverSearching: 2009-05-12
Yeah I know. I think a lot of people who call themselves "emo" just want attention. If your really just cutting, you don't go around bragging about it. You feel ashamed. Some of them I think just like the style tho. But, in my personal opinion, people don't have labels anyway. Everyone's unique.
Comment by PrettyOdd: 2009-05-12
Mhm. Yep. Just as SilentWords said, it's like that where I live, too. The kids who are labeled "emo" try to be that way. They dress all alike, all have dyed black hair, stuff like that. The typical "emo style". And they all spend their time talking about how horrible their lives are, which is kind of funny, since I know some of them, and the kids I know have it great.
Cutting yourself, though, or being depressed doesn't make you "emo". I've struggled with it for a couple years, and I'm not even close to falling into the emo category.
Anyway, the emo kids in my area act like it's cool to be that way, when a lot of people struggle daily trying to get themselves out of that mindset. I could ramble on and on about this, but I really don't think I should.
Besides, I don't think I'm making any sense...
Comment by SilentWords: 2009-05-12
Okay, I am happy you are addressing this Emo thing. I can be emotional (I am damn poet for god shakes) and I had a problem with cutting, a pretty bad case to be honest. But I don’t conceder myself as Emo, or really anything for that matter. I am Lydia.
But where I am from, in Montana and when I lived in Denver, all the “Emos” or whatever they prefer to be called, where all teenagers. No one over the age of 16 would dare call themselves one, now before I get bombarded with angry teenagers. This is ONLY where I live, I can’t say anything for anywhere else. But the emos here go around acting like being depressed and cutting is a cool this, the “Newest trend” is you will. And that’s what makes me mad about the ones that live here. A lot of people (like me) went through a terrible time with depression and cutting, now to have these little kids going around acting like it is no big deal, is actually very insulting. I am not even sure what the TRUE meaning of emo is, or is that’s what they all do? So I would LOVE it, if someone could explain in detail what a emo is, and if all emo kids act like that.
thanks..
Comment by LunaGetsuna: 2009-05-13
I agree with the comments being made; nothing is more aggravating, or even insulting, than that of people being "emo" for nothing more than a little bit of attention. I, too, have suffered greatly from depression, and the fact that people make a trend out of it just sickens me; what is so "cool" about feeling so sad that life itself becomes unbearable -- how on earth is that considered like a fun thing to be? If someone can answer that, then kudos to you, but I doubt anyone will be able to because in truth, there is no logical answer. Hell, there is no logical reason for self harm either, but I, like many people on this site, have fallen into that destructive habit before
Comment by friendZdogZ: 2009-05-12
oh thanks none of you actual had a definition for emo but I'm not so it's cool. I was just wondering though.
I kinda of thought it was like say an illness mayeb...ok not that bad but like something you get because of some reason and not because you just wanna be part of a group...which is pretty sad and all.
so yeah thanks again though.
But I would like to hear what someone who is emo thinks....for the fact you know, not to be bias and such, everybody's got their own opinion after all.
Comment by lifeisdeath: 2009-05-13
i am emo gothic hippy grunge.
emo isnt just cuting its a deep secnce of your emotions and having an intelct of understanding, a love of art and philosiphy and the whole cutting thing?not all of us do that. i dont any more, it is self harm and unless its help to feel somthihng help feel controll help with the emotional pain so the physical isnt so bad its not good. emo isnt cutting stupid and wrong its a way of life and its what us emos feel! so dont juge us
Comment by Haylo: 2009-05-12
As you might know, emo actual is abbreviated from emotional. Things have changed so much, and maybe was something completely different back in the day. i think that labels are just played out so much that we really dont know what they are, exactly. I go to a very small school, and we really dont have labels exactly, but i have been called emo and goth a few times, but im not sure they were completely serious. when i think of people that are emo, i think of them as overly-emotional kinda sorta, lol. im not very helpful, no am I? i wear black pretty much all the time, but im really a very kind person who is nice to everyone who deserves it, haha. im dark alot but that doesnt makes me Emo. Im sorry I havent been much of help, but i think this is a great topic, and would love to talk further if anyone wants to.
Comment by monkeyboy2416: 2009-05-12
I won't bother addressing the emo issue. I only just learnt that we have them in England, so i'm perhaps the wrong person to ask!

But as for the issue of self-harm.
Yes.
That is self-harm, some people cut, some punch themselves, some pull out their hair, some burn themselves, some just bite their lip or dig their nails into their palm... it goes on, and on.
My point is - it doesn't matter if you bleed.

As for that meaning you have some deep psycological problem or not...no idea. But it's a good sign that you admitted it here.
Good luck with stopping.
Comment by darksideofme: 2009-05-13
The way I see it. Your emo if your extremely emotional and cut and you tell the world about it. If you don't tell anyone. You just have problems. I'm pretty much the second one. Everyone has problems. We all cope with them in a different way. Emo people cope with it by telling the world and making a style out of it.
Comment by friendZdogZ: 2009-05-13
youm think i;m emo huh...wow not pl;eased about that since they're not much liked but ok.
thanks for the comment sand such oh and Mike I hardly doubt I am emo because I don't tell anyone my problems...ok maybe online but it's different...no I actually know, knows i've got issues...maybe they suspect it..lol anyways thanks guys and girls..whatever. for the comment and your insight on the whole thing.
oh and the whole self harm thing maybe just maybe i fall under that cat...but it's not like I do stuff constantly...just sometimes..only sometimes thought...is it still the same thing?
Comment by LunaGetsuna: 2009-05-13
Okay, Life is Death, no offense, but what you just spewed out right there is complete and utter bullshit. I believe in philosophy, art, and helping others; does that make me emo? I don't think you should say emo is a beautiful way of life because, I am sorry, but it is not. You people who think you are emo just think, "oh emo is so cool," but it is not cool to wish you were dead every morning you wake up, to feel the pain and suffering of all your loved ones; it is not cool to despise yourself so much that you try and mutilate yourself just to "improve" your self image. Depression is a serious illness, and I don't appreciate people who are "depressed" for attention to try and sell it onto other people by saying it is a grand way of life. For those who are reading this; if you are depressed, suicidal, or bringing any harm what so ever to yourself, you need to seek help. Trust me, if you get help, life will improve; so please just tell a trusted adult or a close friend how you are feeling.

Wow---Go LunaGetsuna!
Comment by darksideofme: 2009-05-13
I never said anyone was Emo.... I mean if you excessively put it out to the world like its something to be proud about. Everyone you know and meet has to know that you self mutilate and think life sucks.

It's not really as bad as people say. That is just the emo stereotype. Emo just means your depressed a lot or have strong sad or negative emotions and you express them more then average.

Its not neccisarily a bad thing.
Comment by friendZdogZ: 2009-05-13
um I so love what LunaGetsuna said, it was awesome and the whole "complete and utter bullshit" just had me cracking.

and Mike, ok I guess I read it wrong.

well from everyone's comment I pretty much got a good understand of what emo is so thanks! Smiley

Cutting is a serious issue and I hope that anyone with this problem can overcome it.

I though emo meant one listened to Chemical Romance and Thirty Seconds to Crap or some shit like that. LOL!!! Let us not get all of this confused. Stop watching MTV!!! That shit will rot your mind. Where are the parents? Where are the fucking parents?? Your kids are listening to crap and they are becoming emo!!! LOL!!!
Comment by darksideofme: 2009-05-15
I don't know..... I like My Chemical Romance..... 30 seconds to Mars is okay. I wouldn't say they are crap though.... They are more successful then you are after all.
Comment by PrettyOdd: 2009-05-15
I...
I...
I listen to MCR, too! I'm not emo.

I gotta agree with the MTV comments. I don't know how that fits in with the emo theme, but it is crap.
Comment by xxxpainxxx: 2009-05-15
So what, I'm emo and I don't cut myself!Or listen to MCR. Emo is a very loose term these days. It can go with the way a company wants a clothing line to look, or when a band wants to make a very emotinal song and a type of music. MTV is bullshit, they say things that aren't true!
Comment by Heartbroken120: 2009-05-15
Yeah I hate this because I am emo. I get very pissed if people call me a cutter or something along those lines! I hate that the world seems to think "emo" means to cut yourself BUT IT'S NOT it stands for emotional. And most of us just don't feel open to talk so we hide in our music, poetry, or somthing like that. I know some emos DO cut themselves
but they are one form of emo... a cutter. NOT ALL EMOS ARE CUTTERS!! We just are not as open as others. I just wish people would open their minds and get the concept...

NOT ALL EMOS ARE CUTTERS!!!!
Comment by friendZdogZ: 2009-05-16
um...calm down ok. who said you're a cutter? see that's thee thing with labels..they suck. you are (insert name here) ok so if people say emos are cutters who's to say they're referring to you?

and how did mtv get in this? lol oh yeah but it does suck...i never watch that channel...unless i have company and they wanna watch it, other than that, never.

No being emo is not a bad thing but what people do to themselves when they are is pretty bad they cut themselves like purposely like they bleed and you can see their cuts they always cut on the arms .

emos wear black and cute their selves and are like always sad and like loners

Now some people wear black, act all sad, Loners and all that but doesn't mean they are Emos they are Goths so you have to be careful when thinking a person is emo they can be goth too

Couple my mates call me emo becuase i listen to hardcore metalcore music and i wear black alot but i've never even thought of self harm so the term emo is pretty much evryones way of saying "wtf ur different you don't listen to techno or hiphop and u wear black the people that sing ur music just yell i cant understand wat they are saying so they are probably talkin about killing themselves u must cut urself and want to die" which is rediculous cos alot of people i know that listen to the same music as me are happy people like myself so its pretty much just a label or stereotype

i live in germany and i can say that munich is the capital of emo-scene, tbh.
But indeed emo doesnt meant to be someone who cuts itself, it is just a scene and emo is the short word for emotional.
so saying that being emo means to be seriously sick is crap.
someone who cuts is a boarderliner or has a burnout-syndrome which is pretty bad, i know what i am talking about.
greetings, Silent.

My sincerest apologies Ms. Darkside, I did not mean to offend you by ridiculing your taste in music indirectly (or anyone else's for that matter) I am not sure what you mean by more "successful than you are" though. If you mean they make more money than I do by creating music that would make Eddie Murphy's 1991 awesomely crappy classic album "Party All The Time" seem like Mozart in comparison then I don't feel bad. LOL!!!!

MTV has degenerated the term "emo" and has caused most of the confusion by misusing the word. This popularized version of "emo" is ridiculous as is most of the comment I just made. Let us not take any of this too seriously people.

There are disturbing reports of female teens being beaten and in some cases killed over this inane bullshit in Queretaro, Mexico. Killed over being labeled "emo." May the sick bastards who committed such atrocities burn in Detroit! As far as I can tell "emos" are just punk rockers with fuckin eyeliner. Let them be. They are not cutters, cutters are cutters, right? Someone get rid of that fuckin word ("emo"). It is deadly. And irrelevant. Now everyone go out and get a Bob Dylan record for christ's sake. LOL!! I am a "Dylan-o" and I don't think anyone would fuckin kill me over that. Oh wait, the Beatleheads might... shit!!!
Comment by PrettyOdd: 2009-05-20
LOL. Favorite, wow. Just wow. Haha.

Hm. Munich is a very large city in Germany. One of the top five, I believe. Yes? And tbh is "to be honest."
Possibly. Either that or I'm just an idiot. Which is probably the case.

okay, i use to cut myself all the time and i dont exactly consider myself emo. i dont really consider myself anything. alothough alot of people dont like to hang out with me because they think its weird that i want to cause myself pain. but really, if you cut yourself you dont want attention, you do it because its the only way you can just let go and generoally it doesnt hurt because its like, releasing stress like i dont know how to explain in. but people that cut themselves and 'emo' people are just normal people.

Comment by AlwaysAlone: 2009-05-24
So, from my experience with "emos" and being labelled an emo myself, because I dress mostly in black, wear eyeliner and listen to metal, I can honestly say that Emo is not just a style. It is a way of life, in that people's attitude defines whether they are emo or not.

From my experience with emos, most of them are just people who like to blow their problems out of proportion because they need more attention than most other people, or they do not get enough attention in the first place. I personally think that being emo is simply hanging out with people, who all dress in the "emo" style, and who will sit and listen to your problems and pretend to care. Not that emosare terrible people. Most of them are really great people, but they just demand a bit more attention =P

And this is speaking from purely personal experience.

wow um..well I don't watch American idol lol so don't really know who Adam is.
Oh and on a side note just like to add that I think...don't overlook that 'I think' personal opinion here; anyhow I think that dudes who wear eyeliner, women's jeans, makeup and saggin pants look seriously gay and it's not even attractive...what kinda style is that?
Now please do remember the 'I think' before it all.
Comment by grunty: 2009-05-25
Yes..I know..I admit it..I watched it this year...I live in a house of girls and I finally gave in. When in Rome ya know. Complained about it for years and I finally gave in. Oh the shame!!!
Anyway...yeah he is emo and so is the fem attitude and the eye liner. I don't see the need to use the I think to save the feelings of people in denail...that is called enabling..and it is now helpful to anyone. But I will say no offence intended. The truth stands on it's own. It is what it is.

hey ppl... i am emo,
but where i live is more of a way to dress and a genre of music eg. funeral for a friend, a vain attempt etc. emos are more sensitive than others and alot of them come from troubled backgrounds etc. but they are mostly misunderstood, lyk the stupid jocks at my school hate them cuz of it. emos are deep but really cool ppl... the guys do wear eyeliner n skinny jeans, but thats just the look, and they have that AWSUM hair... they are really cute and can be depressive... nd the chicks are the same, but skirts have become more popular with them. it really annoys me when people stereotype emos but what can i do....

hope this has helped a bit =)

and honestly the clothes are freakin awesome...well the pink anyway lol..i sound really girly right now but it looks cool
Comment by fade: 2009-05-27
Okay, couldn't help commenting. Quite an interesting conversation you guys have going on here. I think that "emo" is another stereotype, just like "goth" or "prep" or "jock" or whatever. In some cases, it's a perfectly acceptable title- some have no problem being labled as emo. For some, it's just a group to belong too, just like thespians or artists. In other cases, it can be a very mean stereotype- "cutters", attention-seeking, BULL SHIT. Just depends. At my school, the "emos" tend to wear a lot of black, skinny jeans, dark make up, etc. But that's a look, and an expression here.

Many emos don't cut.
Many people not considered emo do cut.Tends to be associated with cutting. I'm not sure why. People who flaunt self-mutilation make me sad. It's also insulting, because i've been working on a very serious struggle with cutting/burning for three years now. I don't consider myself emo, however, and no one would consider me emo. ]

I don't know. The lines are blurred.

As for "cutters"...I know, it varries slightly from the topic, but still...i hate that term. I flipped a bitch on the last person to call me that. I am a person who struggles with cutting. It's a very large part of my past, and its shaped a lot of who I am. In good ways as well as bad. However, I am more than the cutting; I don't define myself but that singular action.

I'm not sure if any of that is helpful in the slightest. I suppose it's just food for thought.

Just like to respoond to Always comment: For clarification: Listening to Metal does NOT mean you are emo. There is emo music, but the labels on music get just as distorted as the labels on people.

Also just another note: Like 5 people started with "I do not consider myself to be emo", but almost every emo person I have ever talked to has said the same thing. I consider them emo by my definition (loathe themselves, have cut at some point or another, and follow the fashion).

I don't agree with giving people labels. It limits your perception of who people are inside or what they can become. Nobody is an emo, or a goth, or a scally, or...any other attempt to stereotype them. We are all individuals. Whats more than that, we are all human beings. Sometimes I'm guilty of presuming upon what a person will be like from their appearance(I try not to), but once I start thinking rationally again I'm then open to see people as they really are. Because of this I've been able to meet some interesting people along the way.
If somebody wants to give you a label, let them. They're the ones that will lose out by not being able to see the person that you really are.

I am not emo in any sense of the word. I don't go for the fashion, the trend, and I definitely have never caused harm to myself. However, I have been friends with many emo people and even dated an emo girl. The thing that I saw the most is that emo people are generally extremely unhappy. Not just with life, but with themselves in particular. Everyone goes through hard times. Life seeming like a beast too great to handle is inevitable. But some people are fighters. They stand up and when life brings the bad they find ways to cope and get through it fight until they get to the good again. What I have seen in emo people is that they crossed the point where they were able to fight. They gave up. Not necessarily because they are weak, some of them were simply faced with too much from a very young age. But either way they have given up, and rather then endure or seek a way to escape the rut they are stuck in, they seek to escape life. I'm not sure why more don't actually commit suicide; that I am still unsure of, but the people I have talked to really do wish that they weren't alive. However, I must also address the emo people who are in it for the fashion. The girl I dated was a prime example of this. Her parents separated when she was still a baby, but aside from that she had one of the most cushy lives I have ever seen. Just to clarify, I am certainly not poor, but I am quite far from rich. I haven't bought a CD in about 3 months. My newest game system is a PS2. Don't gget me wrong, I am grateful for what I have, I am simply explaining my place in the ladder of American society. This girl on the other hand, had one of the largest houses I have ever seen. It had an indoor pool and hot tub. Waterfront property. With only her and her father sharing the house, they had a total of 13 televisions. Her dad had a fancy sportscar and he bought her a 2006 (i think) jeep. All the time she bitched about how she needs a new car and she hates this one and he should buy her a new one. She asks for money all the time, and gets paid like $30 just for doing the dishes. All the while she hates herself, treats her friends terrribly, and tehn later falls apart saying that she has no friends. She also hated her life and wanted to die. This is the kind of emo that nobody can stand. I know I dated her, but that was my mistake to learn. These are the kinds of people that make everyone want to turn and run at the word emo. Basically that is all I have to say about the emo label.

well at my school, i am laybled "emo". people call me that because i dress to my mood, and i went through a pretty rough patch at the beginning of school. i wore black and baggy dark clothes. I didnt evn care what people thought of me so i didnt wear makeup and everything. I confided in my best guyfriend that i cut because i needed to tell someone and his brother/my ex read the txt and told everyone and i went from popular to at the very bottom...I guess thats why people called me emo, but idk. people think that all "emos" cut for attention, but that is not true. some dont even cut. and there are plenty of people who arent "emo" and still cut. the reason that most people do that is because they are going through a rough time and going through alot of pain emotionally/physically/socially etc. and thats the only pain they can control. i hope this helped but idk i know i just rambeled on but its a thought Smiley

Everyone is emo in their own way, some just show it more than others. Emo; Short for emotional. People who get labelled the term; wear the darker clothes and the 'punk-indie' sorta thing *I don't really know the fashion term* However, I know loads of people who dress in such a way; but; they are among some of the happiest people I have ever met, yes, they do show their unhappy feelings alot more than most, but they also show their happiness ALOT more than most. The term is often used as an insult; being 'emo' often meens you 'Hate life; and are suicidal, though as most labels and stereotypes go; it's ussualy poorly placed and defiantly does not help the individual. As the cutting thing goes; self harm is often a natural response to sadness or emotional distress- it's the mind turning mental pain into physical pain. It can actually prove to help some people (to an extent), but instead of physicaly harming yourself, find a boxing bag, get a bat; go nuts.
