Dream Garden

Category: Fiction

This story begins in the back yard of an apartment building, which was located in Queens New York. The building was a family building, which meant that everyone that lived there had kids. The neighborhood wasn’t exactly family friendly though. Almost all the parents worked till late at night so their kids were home alone and this is how all the children met. They would all go over to one apartment and stay there until their parents got home, for you see these children were like brothers and sisters to each other.
On one Tuesday evening Susan, Ally, Helen and Bradley who were all in the same class had an agricultural project to do for school. The children had to transform a part of their backyard or park or anywhere to make it look better and they had exactly one month to do so. They didn’t know what to do but they had to do something because if they didn’t do well on the project they’d all be held back. As I had said before the children of the building were like family so everyone tried to help them out.
A whole week passed without them doing anything but alas a tip saved them from Alley mother who suggest that they do their project on the backyard. They were very excited about the idea but then remembered that the backyard wasn’t much of a backyard, it would need a lot of work. They woke up bright and early Saturday morning and began their work. First they began to move everything that didn’t belong out of the backyard so by eight thirty they were finished.
They were all aware that they needed money so they all asked their parents then they combined that with their spare change, which was a total of $29.82. Alley and Helen both went down to the flower shop and bought about four different packs of flower seeds while Ally and Bradley got the other kids to help them out. At about after two they had totally finished cleaning the backyard. Then they went in for lunch and thought about how they would put the flowers and plants. They drew up a great plan on paper only thing left to do was to get it started.
They had seeds for the Daffodil, Daisy, Sunflower and the yellow Rose, which they planted in the shape of a flower at all the corners of the garden. They then watered their flowers and went inside. The younger kids helped a lot by growing red bean plants and planting them. By Wednesday they went to check on their garden the only thing growing was the red bean plants so they had to think of something else. They gave their flowers a whole week and they hardly grew. The kids were starting to give up hope. They only had one week until their teacher came and all she would see were red bean plants!
Monday came and went, Tuesday came and went and Wednesday came and they got an idea. Since their flowers were taking to long they decided to just get plants that were already grown and put them in the garden. Only thing wrong was that they didn’t know where to get the plants. They thought and thought and thought but noting came to them. Then Thursday while waiting for the bus Alley was still thinking about it, and then it hit hr like a brick! She knew exactly where to get the plants. When she went to school she asked her teacher if she could take home some of the plants and she said yes. When Alley got home she asked her mother if she could get some of her plants to use and she also said yes. Alley called her teammates and told them to ask their parents to use their plants and they all said yes. So in the end they had thirteen different plants for their garden.
They took the plants out of their pots and planted them in different spots of the garden and were finished. When they looked at their garden it wasn’t great but it was pretty good. Friday came and went and then Saturday came. When they woke up on Saturday morning they all looked out the window and were surprised to see that their flowers had grown after all. They were so excited. All the kids gathered and waited for Mrs. Emmons their teacher to arrive. They place a picnic table in the center of their garden and put some treats on it.
Mrs. Emmons arrived somewhere around noon and was greeted by Bradley and Susan. “Good day miss,” said both Bradley and Susan. “Good day, where are the other members of your group?” she asked. “They are inside our garden awaiting your arrival,” answered Susan. Then Bradley said shortly after, "Won't you come into the garden? I would like my roses to see you." When he saw the look Susan gave him he quickly added, “I mean our roses,” and opened the backdoor for Mrs. Emmons. When she walked in she couldn’t believe her eyes she never thought that they could pull it off. For you see their backyard was the worst among all the other building’s backyards and everyone knew it so to see it transformed into one of the most beautiful is quite unbelievable. When the children saw the huge smile on their teacher’s face they knew for sure that they’d gotten an A.
They decided that even though it was only a project for school they’d still keep the garden. Take care of it well and add to it ever so often and they did just that. By the time they were of the age for collage their garden was still alive and was still the best in their neighborhood. They kept it alive for years and as they all left for collage they hoped that the new owners would really do the same.
