Through my Eyes

As we walk amongst this world
In the midst of pandemonium
We realize the extent of our humanity.

While there exists those who are born great,
The prevailing force that we, as humans, become to learn through existence,
Is that of repulsion.

The world we inhabit is broadcasted
With criminals, prisoners, racists and the like
Civilization, at least in a stained perspective, is tainted.

Riddled with experiences of adversity
Caused by the innate nature of seemingly all the human race
We can hardly withstand the calamity that surrounds life.

Yet, as we grow enveloped in darkness,
We sometimes forget light does exist,
The sun shines brighter than the night’s shadows .

And for every criminal there is a police officer,
For every prisoner there is a guard,
For every racist there exists an equally fervent activist.

Yet, contrary to comic book beliefs,
We sometimes accept a false truth believing,
Darkness seemingly engulfs the radiance emitted by the unsung heroes of our society.

In this world media leads us to forget the victims,
While offenders are held in Hollywood’s spotlight,
Jeffery Dahmer was molded into a celebrity while those who suffered at his hands are lost in history.

It is no secret that this world is crooked,
Humanity consists of shortcomings,
But what we have to remember, is that there are people that shine.

Those bright lights are hidden amidst the dark,
And once uncovered can illuminate your world,
In an unimaginable surge of pure happiness.

Those moments in life that we sometimes forget,
Friends, family, loved ones,
The laughter of a child, mutual smiles exchanged by adults,
Memories.

These memories that exist and have yet to be created in the future,
Define our lives, consist of personal relationships,
That touch our minds and our hearts for the rest of our existence.

We forget to recall these moments in time,
And get lost in a torrent of negativity brought on by downbeats ,
But, we have to keep at heart the people that surround us, that create our memories.

In a world seemingly dominated by disappointment,
There are those people that surpass our expectations,
That illuminate our damped conceptions of reality,
And carry us to a heightened sense of being, of living.
