My Conclusion

Okay, One day while trying to go to sleep after working all night, this thought popped into my head. Why do the best poem some people write come from a moment of extreme emotion. Like my poems, most are written in the dark depths of depression.

So If it is because of our heightned state of emotion that we see things, or think of things differently. Then why is it that when later in life, after the moment has long passed, when you try and write a poem about it, it never turns out real good. Or when you try your hardest to write a poem, for ans assignment, or a contest, and they always seem to suck. Answer this my friends

So, in a heightend emotion state one has a higher level of thought focused on one thing, the dominating emotion, whatever it may be. Thus, for those of us that write. creates thought patterns for prose and poetry. And when you try to recall that later, it has died. there is nothing to draw upon. at least that is what i came up with, with the help of some friends.

Perhaps great poetry is written in the extremities of emotion because most people never see life through rose tinted glasses...or blood tinted glasses, depending on your mood.
So love, rage, depression, or psychosis creates a viewpoint most people never see.
They also spur people on. The urge to mark your skin is remarkably similar to the urge to mark paper, at least that's what i find.
Anyway, that's what i think, great question!

Because emotions are interesting. Maybe they make lots of those little thought-neurons start firing off in our brains? I don't really know. But if we are emotional we care about what we're writing about... there's like 3 theories!

OR maybe you just think you write the best poetry when you're emotional because it brings back memories of that intense state of mind you were in?

My Opinion-
Intense emotion leads to expression. Not everyone expresses themselves through poetry (painting, talking, cutting, whatever), but taking that emotion and making it somehow physical always seems to ease it all... like feeling things that seem so involved and intimate causes a pressure of sorts (good, bad, or otherwise), and writing about it lets that pressure out. For me, poetry validates whatever crap I'm feeling. It seems that if I write about it, that makes it feel more real and concrete; if it's real, I can start to acknowledge it and figure out what the hell to do about it. Or, if I'm being less phychologically healthy, I put it down in pen and can set it aside until I have enough energy to tackle it- I noticed, I wrote it out, I can come back later.
Plus, no matter what, a journal or computer or just plan on words can't judge you. No matter how dark you feel, a poem is beautifully articulated emotion without a judgmental personality behind it.
So that's what I think.

because when we feel intenese emotion, in my opinion atleast, then sometimes we cant talk about it, and when we write, we can just let it all out, in words we probably wouldnt have thought of if it werent for the emotion. if yr writing has no emotion, it is no good

Hmmm...
Very true.
To put it shortly...because i can't really say!
It's the difference between having a fight with someone who just pissed you right off, and walking up to someone in the street who pissed you off weeks ago. Who you're not even mad at any more, and punching them in the mouth.
One feels so, so, right.
But the other is an expression of a dead and decomposing emotion.

It's the difference between kissing someone you love, and kissing someone you USED to love...
One is just an attempt to recapture something that's long since fled.
If that makes any sense?

Yes it does. All this conversation has eased my mind somewhat, and I thank you all for your answers and deep thoughts.
