Comfortably Quiet

I will always remember
sitting on the bench at the top of the hill
watching the fog roll in and cover the valley in a blanket of white,
wishing on shooting stars at night.
I will always remember
the thousand inside jokes we have
that shouldn't be funny, but still make us laugh.
The playground swings and silver rings and talking about
the stupid things we've done.
...and Burger King.
I will always remember
the things that were said in the heat of the moment,
violent car games and loud, foreign music,
and hiding from police who want us off of the streets
because we're always "up to no good"
when in reality we're only doing what good kids should.
We fill our lungs with cold night air
and stretch out legs on the pavement.
Instead of getting drunk or smoking weed
we swap stories and play Jenga on a park bench.
We're crunk on life
We do what we want and,
with the exception of the occasional eye poke,
no one gets hurt.
That's the way we like it:
simple and cheap and comfortably quiet.
