Upon the Raven's Tattered Wing

My knees buckle as I fall to the floor;
They barely support my limp body as I kneel.
I squeeze my eyes shut to drown out the world
Though tears manage still to fall
Like the pouring rain that beats against my windowpane.
Each liquid crystal takes a different form;
My troubles, my fears, my regrets...
Alone I remain as I inevitably tremble
Overwhelmed by the weight of sorrow and neglect.
My hero is nowhere to be found,
Distance is a formidable foe
And rather than reaching out to you
I withdraw further into myself.
Someday freedom will be mine
No longer will I be plagued and destroyed
By these worldly worries and my own shortcomings
For I shall be untouchable if ever
I summon the courage to save myself.
Until then I beg you darling
To whisper in my ear
And tell me all I want to hear.
Assure me with your tainted words
Break the barriers I've created
Do your worst and I'll remain intentionally oblivious;
I aspire to harden myself against truth's cruelties.
Or will you bring me into the world
To watch me suffer further
Like a cat with its prey, toying with curiosity
In order to see how long it can last?
Because even as these words are formed
I feel your breath blowing into my ear
Accompanied by your sootheing voice:
"Listen now, meet my eyes
Hush my child and do not cry
Life is just a nightmare
From which very few can soon be spared
But allow your eyelids to flutter up for my scheme
Awaken from life, the terrible dream
And you can escape from everything
Upon the raven's tattered wing."
In obeyance I draw a shaky breath
So I may meet my fateful death
My eyes now open but they do not see,
Glazed over with a neverending stare
Just as it was meant to be.
