The First Lie
Outside my window, the birds sing
And clouds doze in the sky.
Flowers smile at the sun
Waving from up high.
Out the door and through the trees
I dash at break-neck pace;
Today is far too beautiful
To let it go to waste.
The rabbits, they all greet me;
The deer and hummingbirds too.
Together we lie down and stare
At the sky so blue.
And then the sky turns grey
As it rains blood and ash.
The animals desert me
And lightning starts to flash.
Of course, I don’t run;
I don’t even bother to hide.
I know that I could not escape
Even if I tried.
