Hidden Pain
I stare into a mirror
Trying hard to see
Why doesn’t it show
The person that is me?
What’s with all this makeup?
Not only on my face
On my arms as well
To hide my disgrace
It’s like I wear a mask
Supported by a smile
You can’t see my pain
But it’s been there all the while
Inside I start to cry
But of course it doesn’t show
The extent of my pain
You will never know
I stand here tonight
Tomorrow I’ll be gone
Perhaps you’ll get this letter
Written in a song
My mask will not falter
My smile will not fade
I will remain this person
Hidden in the shade
In death I will leave you
I will not emerge again
But if you listen closely
You’ll hear me in the rain
