No More Promises

What is the significance of a promise if it is left doubtful and unkempt ? You look into my eyes and tell me there is not an ounce of uncertainty in your heart, your gaze so intense that this nonsense oozing from your mouth must be truth. Hesitant to truly acknowledge your word due to the shards of shattered promises that lay about me, I take my time. Slowly but surely plummeting deeper into the hole of naivety that ,even in being so careful, I have dug myself. I hear the wind whistle in my ear as I fall, warning that the base of this hollow is not as gentle and secure as promised. Still high off the fumes of passion, I disregard the wind, telling him my love would never let me strike hard ground. So sure of the catch at the end of this dive I was that I hadn’t noticed the signs. Seeing the end was near, I close my eyes and hold my breath, expecting to land safely in your arms. But I soon come to find that cold hard earth is all that cradles my shaken body. Now alone in my hovel of stupidity, my void of insecurity ,my hole of halve-hearted promises, I gently weep.
